Every original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has many things to consider, but one of the most important issues is the outsourcing of work. When considering a reliable contract partner to do the work, an OEM may overlook a number of factors, especially indirect costs.

Long before it considers outsourcing, your company needs to evaluate the true costs involved in manufacturing. A proper understanding of this issue will be needed when comparing the services of different contract manufacturers and before selecting the firm that has the most to offer. A careful comparison will be necessary if you want to do what is best for your business.

An OEM will often contrast the expenses related to labor and manufacturing with the total cost of outsourcing with a partner. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of the cost of manufacturing a piece of equipment or any product, however, it is necessary to consider more than merely your material bill and your labor expenses.

Calculating Indirect Costs

The calculation of such costs does not take into consideration indirect overhead expenses, which can be both fixed or variable. A valid comparison between the costs of in-house versus outsourced production will require the calculation of many other factors, including the follow:

  • Production facility utility needs, including electricity, natural gas, water and sewer services

An Outsourced Production Case Study

The following is an example of how outsourcing reduced the indirect costs of a particular OEM, with a list of some of the promising business opportunities it was able to reach:

  • The contractor received a single order for 300 units of a certain product, relieving the OEM from having to take any other steps.
  • The procurement and receiving departments purchased and processed 141,600 parts from 52 outside firms over a period of five weeks, during this time managing orders with the suppliers of commercial and electrical components, raw materials and sheet metal, and with a plastic injection molding company.
  • The contractor’s machine shop managed 1,837 computer-controlled machining hours to manufacture 10,500 parts over the same five-week period.
  • The assembly department managed 4,277 assembly hours to produce 300 ordered units over a period of nine weeks.
  • The production crew was comprised of five electrical assemblers, four mechanical assemblers and a quality control inspector.

Throughout the entire process, the OEM was freed from having to deal with any of these specific issues or having to calculate any of the indirect costs involved. Additionally, it did not sacrifice a single opportunity due to inside or outside distractions.

The next time your OEM decides to outsource its manufacturing work, the company will have to calculate its indirect in-house costs before it can finalize a contract with another firm. Once you have determined your own production costs, you will be able to decide which partner can best serve your company.

Have you experienced a drifting hydraulic cylinder? /have-you-experienced-a-drifting-hydraulic-cylinder/ Fri, 08 Sep 2017 21:32:10 +0000 /?p=3223

There are specific conditions within a hydraulic circuit which could cause a cylinder to slowly creep when its 4-way directional control valve is in its center neutral position. The cause (in the hydraulic circuit) for cylinder drift is the unequal areas on opposite sides of the piston. Oil which leaks across the spool of the 4-way valve, under pressure, acts on unequal areas of the piston to develop a force imbalance which may cause unwanted piston movement unless there happens to be sufficient load against the piston rod to restrain piston drift. Oil leaking internally across the piston seals can also cause drift.

Cylinders which have an oversize or 2:1 ratio piston rod has a greater tendency to drift than those cylinders with smaller (standard) diameter rod. Drifting force is equal to system pressure multiplied times rod area. Therefore, on circuits where drifting may be a problem, the cylinder should have the smallest diameter rod which has sufficient column strength.

 

Cylinder drift due to hydraulic leaks is not a usual occurrence and is normally the result of oil contamination or component failure. The issues that cause cylinder leaks can occur on any cylinder, and the resulting drift of position can vary based on where the cylinder is installed in the system. The movement as a result of cylinder drift will vary on the load being supported and the position and orientation of the cylinder. Original Equipment Manufacturers (O.E.M.) normally provide specific instructions on the proper inspections and tests needed to allow a trained technician to diagnose the cause of cylinder drift. Proper maintenance and lubrication of your cylinders are essential. When detected, hydraulic issues should be corrected.

What is a Poppet Valve? /what-is-a-poppet-valve/ Fri, 01 Sep 2017 21:37:31 +0000 /?p=3230 Apoppet valveis a type of directional valve which utilizes a ball and seat instead of a traditional spool. You may not realize it, but you take advantage of poppet valves every day when you drive to work. Without poppet valves, your car wouldn’t be able to function! (Assuming you have a combustion engine)

 

 

Poppet valves act like check valves, but with the ability to allow free flow across the seat. Plus, in certain configurations, poppet valves can direct the flow of media to ports on the valve body like a traditional directional valve. Utilizing a poppet valve in your hydraulic or pneumatic circuit can allow you to have the features of a check valve, but with the versatility of a directional valve.

Poppet valves have many advantages, but here a few:

• Check Valve and Directional Valve in one body
• Little or no leakage across the seat
• Faster response rates
• Higher flow rates than a similar sized spool-type valve
• Longer product life • Less maintenance!

When reading a hydraulic schematic, you can identify a poppet valve by the ball and seat, similar to a check valve, but located within a valve body box. See Figure 1 for a Poppet valve symbol. The full description of the valve shown is a solenoid-operated, 3 way 2 position (3/2), spring-return poppet valve. In the normal position, port 1 is open to 2 while port 3 is sealed off. When the electric solenoid is powered, port 3 is open to 2 while port 1 is sealed off. When the solenoid releases, the valve returns to the normal position.

Online shopping has transformed the world of retail. It has altered the way people shop for everyday items. People aren’t running out to the mall to do all their shopping. Instead, they are going online, placing orders, and getting them delivered directly to their house.

This change in shopping patterns has dramatically changed the way retail establishments distribute their products. And those changes will continue well into the future.

Where Sales are Made

The most obvious change in retail distribution is the drop in sales at brick-and-mortar stores. Fewer people are making their purchases in the store. Instead, they will visit the store so they can look at new merchandise. That allows them to try things on and check for quality. Then, instead of making the purchase at the register, they make the order online, at whatever retailer offers the best price.

Because of this change in customer behavior, retailers are developing multiple channels to engage customers. They promote the ability to order online, in store and from mobile devices. The goal is to give customers what they want when they want it. Customers now expect retailers to provide a consistent, fluid experiences across all their sales channels. This has greatly altered the way retailers design and manage their supply chains.

The Software Solutions Managing the Changes

To manage multiple sales channels, retailers have had to invest a lot into software solutions that connect everything together. These solutions interconnect all aspects of the retail sales and supply chain, from the stores to the websites to the distribution centers to the trucks moving products.

In decades past, a retailer would have to build brick-and-mortar stores if they wanted to move into a new region. That would also require large investments in logistics and distribution centers. Those days are quickly passing.

Today, retailers can attract buyers from around the country, and even from around the world. It gives them the chance to expand their footprint without the investment in brick-and-mortar stores. They can work with fulfillment partners to distribute products to their online customers.

The role of brick-and-mortar stores is changing. Retailers use their physical stores to showcase targeted sections of their product mix. They focus the offerings on the local market to retain physical sales opportunities. The stores also provide a place where a consumer can come in and see what the chain has to offer. This helps the store sales as well as online channels.

How does this impact retail distribution? Retailers still send deliveries out to their stores, but each shipment includes fewer products. This drives up the cost of each item. Retailers are trying to offset the smaller shipments with being able to fulfill customer orders in new ways, like from store-to-store or distribution center to store. The difficulty is figuring out how to route these orders through an existing network.

Managing the Larger Numbers of Direct-to-Consumer Orders

Fulfillment centers are handing more and more direct to consumer orders. This is partially due to people ordering so much online, but it is also being driven by in-store sales of out-of-stock items. Many retailers are looking for new solutions on how to handle this increase in direct orders. They are evaluating their existing networks and looking at adding regional distribution centers to get closer to consumer locations.

The challenge is balancing the growth of e-commerce, the change in physical locations, and the distribution of products. Each one affects the other in numerous ways. One option many retailers are looking at is partnering with a 3PL to develop regional distribution centers. It is one-way retailers are managing this challenge.
